HISTORY
Listen to the story on tearadio.com.
Mint Brook Meadow Teas began in 2003, while two dairy farmers were overhauling an Oliver Tractor Engine talking about low milk prices and the prevalence of large, almost factory-style, dairy operations. Both were looking for a way to remain in agriculture but because of the declining dairy market they needed an alternative. Having wild spearmint growing in their meadows and pastures, they often served it to guests. They received so many positive comments, and knowing it grew well, they plowed up a rye field and planted certified peppermint rootstock in the spring. In the black soil of the long ago drained Newman Creek Bottoms, they put out their Spearmint. Originally destined for Celestial Seasonings, so many neighbors and friends commented on how distinct and flavorful Mint Brook Meadow Tea was they decided to market their crop under their own label. The reason for the difference in flavor of Mint Brook Meadow's Peppermint & Spearmint herbal Tea, is Mint Brook Meadow air dries their herbs slowly, out of the sun, not freeze drying or sun curing the crop. this is the reason for its green appearance and many undertones.
IN OTHER WORDS
Mint planter Dante Tropea wasn't smiling when his neighbor put in a 3,000 cow dairy beside his 40 cow dairy farm, he wasn't smiling when he accidentally spilled insecticide on his skin, he wasn't smiling when he got his fuel bills for drying his corn. It was time for a change! He got rid of insecticides and chemical fertilizers, sold his dairy cows to an organic farmer, and became a mint planter. Now he operates the only air-dried mint plantation in the United States that markets it's own estate herbs under it's own name. If that wasn't original enough, he sold the farm fuel tanks and operates the entire leaf drying process by corn burning furnaces; the corn ashes go back onto the fields as fertilizer of are used as an insect repellent on melons. Offering his quality herbs and tea blends via Mint Brook Meadow Teas, now Dante has something to smile about!
MISSION
Mint Brook Meadow Teas, Ltd is the official, legal name of a small agrarian effort by the Tropea family, to grow and package their own herbs as well as to offer teas of other planters throughout the world in both loose and tea bag form. In a market dominated by low end, low price oriented teas, we aim to provide a tea crop of high quality, giving the consumer the same flavors in their cup of tea as in the cup of tea the growers have, with all the freshness and undertones only high quality tea can offer.
